The Temple Complex of Osian is a major pilgrimage center for both Hindu & Jain. This is group of Jain and Hindu temples evolved between 8th – 12th centuries.
The 8th century Mahavir Temple of the Jains is best preserved at Osian, and Osian has special significance for it is the originating place of the merchant Jain community of Oswal. Like most temple architecture of western India, the pattern echoes the style of the spire and the domical roof of the Temple. The Temple complex is built of sandstone. The pillars are decorated with motifs of foliage and auspicious vase. The elaborately decorated celling is a succession of receding concentric courses with scalloped motifs and a hanging pendant. The strut figures on ceiling portray standing dancers and musicians, formed by the foliage of trees. Another essential characteristic of Jain Temples is chapels, each with its shrine chamber and portico.
The Hindu Temple of Harihara at Osian is yet another finest example of alliance of Indian architectural grace with sculptural exuberance. Particularly noteworthy is exquisite doorway and the richly carved outer walls of Temple. The Sachiya Mata Temple is notable for its imposing multi-turreted spire and Sun Temple is interesting for its Grecian looking porch columns.
Osian is 65 Kms from Jodhpur on Jodhpur Bikaner Highway.
