Commemorative celebrations are held in the solemn memory of Khwaja Sahib, a respected Sufi Siant, popularly known as Garib Nawaz. Biggest of all the Rajasthan Muslim festivals is the six day Urs at Dargah Sharif in Ajmer commemorating the death of venerated Saint Khwaja Chisthi, in the Muslim month of Rajab. Special prayers are offered at the mosque and the complete town is decorated with buntings.
The word URs has been derived from Uroos which means ultimate meeting of an individual with God. URS commences with flag hoisting at Buland Darwaza on 25th Jamadi-us-Sani. The 06th day of the Rajab is regarded to be the most special and auspicious. People gather to recite Holy Quran, Darood etc. all the time and pray for the blessings from the Holy Saint. The entrance of the people into Shrine, except Khadims is closed from 1000 Hrs. The Khadims start Qul Ceremony by reciting Quran, Darood and Shijra-e-chistia and other verses. They pray for the peace and prosperity of the people and also for those who are not present but have sent Nazar-Niyaz [Devotional Amount]. Khadims tie small turbans on each other’s head and present Nazar. The Ceremony is marked closed by firing cannon at 1330 Hrs. After this Khadims distribute Tabarruk [Prasad] amongst the people present and post them for those who have sent Nazar-o-Niyaz. The Mazaar Sharif is washed by rose water by Khadims at night for Six Days from 1-06th Rajab during Urs period.
On 09th Rajab at 0900 Hrs, the Mazaar-Shariff is washed by Khadims. Finally URS is marked closed.
